Dr. Sohail J. Hasan Leads Advocacy Efforts at AAO’s Congressional Advocacy Day and Mid-Year Forum 2025

We are proud to share that Dr. Sohail Hasan, MD, PhD, FACS, FASRS, FRCSC, retina surgeon at Illinois Retina Associates, a member of Retina Consultants of America (RCA), played a central leadership role at the 2025 American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Congressional Advocacy Day (CAD) and Mid-Year Forum (MYF) in Washington, D.C.
As Chair and Associate Secretary for OPHTHPAC, Dr. Hasan served as host, moderator, and speaker throughout the event. He opened the week by leading the Congressional Dinner Briefing, setting the tone for a powerful and engaging advocacy experience. In a memorable and lighthearted moment, Dr. Hasan donned his signature American Eagle cowboy suit, boots, and hat, and shared the now-famous “talking frog” story, to a warm and enthusiastic crowd. A custom American Eagle backdrop added to the fun and energy of the evening.
Dr. Hasan delivered a featured presentation explaining the mission and critical impact of OPHTHPAC, the Academy’s political action committee, and emphasized the importance of sustained advocacy efforts. He also moderated the session on federal legislative priorities, helping equip attendees with key talking points for their congressional meetings.
The event drew hundreds of ophthalmologists from across the country, including many resident advocacy ambassadors, all united in their dedication to preserving access to quality eye care.
One of the week’s highlights was Dr. Hasan’s presentation of the AAO Visionary Award to Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) in recognition of her unwavering support for patients and the ophthalmology profession.
Dr. Hasan also hosted the OPHTHPAC VIP Reception, which honored high-level donors and featured Congressman Dr. Herb Conaway (D-NJ) as a special guest—who made a point to attend despite the House being in recess. The reception also welcomed Dr. Stephen McLeod, CEO of the AAO.
In addition to his leadership roles, Dr. Hasan joined the Illinois delegation in meetings with several key legislators, including a visit with Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL).
During these congressional meetings, the delegation advocated for:
- Fighting continued cuts to Medicare and Medicaid
- Supporting legislation to reduce the burdens of prior authorization
- Increasing federal funding for the National Eye Institute (NEI)
- Supporting pediatric eye care funding
- Protecting and prioritizing eye care for our nation’s veterans
Dr. Hasan also took a moment to personally thank the Leadership Development Program participants for their engagement and commitment to advancing the profession through advocacy.
Illinois Retina Associates and RCA proudly recognize Dr. Hasan for his ongoing national leadership and his steadfast dedication to protecting the future of ophthalmology and patient care.
